Thanks so much to everyone who played last week’s trivia game! It looks like you enjoyed it. If you’re curious about the answers and the winner, I’ve updated last week’s game with that information.

At the bottom of the post, there is a link where you can email me your answers. If you send them in by noon Eastern on Monday, April 6, and you have all the answers right, I’ll enter you in a draw for a $10 Tim Hortons gift card. (I’m working on changing the prize for future games to support local independent businesses; with luck, I’ll have that in place soon.)

NOTE: This week’s game has closed in terms of being able to win the prize, but you’re welcome to play for fun! I’ve updated the post to include the answers at the very bottom. And I’ll be in touch with the winner shortly.

And now, on to this week’s game, with 10 more questions to test your knowledge of places in Ontario, Quebec and beyond. As always, note that this is virtual travel only—please wait to actually visit these places until the COVID-19 crisis ends!

Question 1: The Red Baron and the Hardy Boys

What Lanark County community was once home to both the man credited with shooting down the Red Baron and a boy who would grow up to write 19 Hardy Boys books?

Question 2: Rebuilding the past

the wakefield covered bridge is one of the village's best-known landmarks.

In what Outaouais town can you stay in a stone mill rebuilt after a 1910 fire and cross a covered bridge rebuilt after a 1984 fire?

Question 3: Great galleries and jazz

Nanouk is the friendly and official greeter at MonSky — unless he’s having a snooze beneath Gary Viola’s feet, that is! Photo by Katharine Fletcher.

In what Rideau Canal village will you find a gallery called MonSky Creations, where the “staff” includes a friendly, fluffy dog named Nanouk? (Hint: The village also hosts a popular jazz festival each fall.)

Question 4: A jaw-dropping basilica

In which city can you visit the stunning Notre-Dame Basilica where Céline Dion tied the knot? (Yes, I know there are many Notre-Dames, but I’m looking for a particular one.)

Question 5: Beer and gingerbread

beau's Brewing Company is a popular stop in Vankleek Hill.

What Eastern Ontario town—nicknamed the Gingerbread Capital of Ontario, due to its many Victorian houses with gingerbread trim—is also home to Beau’s All-Natural Brewing Company?

Question 6: Repurposed buildings

The Senate of Canada is now temporarily housed in a building that was recently a government conference centre. However, what was the building’s function when it originally opened in 1912?

Question 7: Deep-fried Oreos!

What upstate New York city is home to the huge annual New York State Fair?

Question 8: Canada’s last duel

Here’s another Lanark County question: In what Eastern Ontario town did Canada’s last fatal duel take place? (You can learn all about it at the town’s museum, pictured.)

Question 9: A really big log building

The building that is now the Fairmont Le Château Montebello hotel was originally a private sports and country club. One of the largest log structures in the world, it was constructed in just four months and opened in what year?

Ranging a little further away for this one: What Ontario resort near Georgian Bay—known for skiing in the winter and amusement rides in the summer—shares its name with a rugged mountain chain west of Sydney, Australia? (Note that the resort’s name is singular, while the name of the mountain chain is plural; I’m not going to be picky with the answer!)

And here are the answers

  1. Carleton Place
  2. Wakefield
  3. Merrickville
  4. Montreal
  5. Vankleek Hill
  6. Train station
  7. Syracuse
  8. Perth
