Whether you’re looking for discounts on Outaouais attractions, hoping to join a giant singalong at the NAC or keen to sign up for a fundraising run, this week’s Heads Up post will point you in the right direction.

Oxford Mills farm is holding a picnic in the field

The Kirk Farm in Oxford Mills, south of Kemptville, is holding a Soirée in the Field on Thursday, August 1. The three-hour picnic will include charcuterie, a drink and live music, and tickets are available now.

Two spots for art lovers

Le Centre d’Art Populaire du Québec (276, rue Desjardins, Plaisance) is now operating from an expanded, 6,000-square-foot space. The gallery showcases the works of Quebec folk artists, and its current show (running until October 13) features 11 artists who create everything from miniatures of farm equipment to monumental sculptures.

Meanwhile, on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River, the Arts Carleton Place (ACP) Art Hub (50 Bennett Street, Unit 1, Carleton Place) is a new space selling works by the ACP’s member artists and artisans. They include painters, photographers, fibre artists, sculptors, jewellers, potters and more. The year-round space will run shows for six weeks at a time. The first one is called New Beginnings.

Attention, runners who like good causes

CHEO’s RBC Race for the Kids is a major fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario on Sunday, October 6. There will be timed 5K and 10K races, as well as a 2K family fun run. It’s all happening at Wesley Clover Parks, and registration is open now.

Popular singalong event adds second NAC show

If you’ve ever been to a performance by Toronto-based Choir! Choir! Choir!, you know how much fun it is. Basically, the duo’s shows are huge karaoke events, as they energetically lead the entire audience in a singalong of popular songs. (The song list changes with each tour.)

Myself, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I had a blast when I went a few years ago with a friend who IS a very talented singer. Honestly, once you’ve belted out Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ with thousands of other people, you never forget it! The video above, shot at the NAC in 2019, gives you a sense of what to expect.

The group’s upcoming evening performance at the NAC on Saturday, September 21, sold out so quickly that they’ve added a second matinée show, and tickets are now available. The song list this time will include Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

You can save money on Outaouais fun

Did you know that the Tourisme Outaouais website has a whole page of discounts and deals? Current offerings include 25 per cent off a two-night stay at the Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa, and 20 per cent off zipline tickets (for a group of four) at Camp Fortune.
