The Ottawa Road Trips newsletter is changing platforms

Attention, Ottawa Road Trips newsletter subscribers!

Thanks very much for subscribing to the weekly newsletter. It’s one of my primary ways of sharing my posts about our region, and I really appreciate your support.

Today, I have a housekeeping announcement. Starting with the April 15, 2025, issue, the Ottawa Road Trips newsletter will be coming to you from a different platform. I’m moving it to the Substack newsletter service.

Beginning on April 15, the newsletter will look a bit different. But it will still be packed with road trip ideas, details on upcoming events, contest tips and more, as always.

Why is the newsletter moving?

I’m moving the newsletter for a few reasons.

First, my current newsletter service, MailChimp, has become ridiculously expensive. Substack is a much better financial proposition.

Second, Substack is a great way to promote the newsletter to people who may not have heard of it, as it allows readers to share and recommend the newsletter more easily.

And third, Substack will allow me to offer a paid tier of subscriptions…but DON’T WORRY! The newsletter as you know it will always remain free of charge. That’s what I promised when I started it 13 years ago, and that will never change.

So if the newsletter will still be free, why would someone pay for it?

Good question!

The paid subscription will offer EXTRA goodies in addition to the newsletter, such as…

  • group Zoom sessions, where I’ll answer your road-tripping questions in real time
  • exclusive deals, including discounts on my road tripping guidebooks
  • printable road trip itineraries

A button labelled “Upgrade to paid” will appear in each newsletter from April 15 onward. Just click on it if you’d like to get those cool extra benefits. Paid subscriptions will be available for as little as $5 a month.

What do subscribers have to do to keep receiving the newsletter for free?

Ideally, you won’t have to do a thing! The newsletter should keep coming to you just as it always has.

However, if you encounter any problems receiving the newsletter—in particular, if you don’t receive it by the end of the day on Tuesday, April 15—please email me to let me know and I’ll do my best to fix the problem.

You may need to add my email address to your contacts and/or “whitelist,” to prevent the newsletter from going into your spam folder or being blocked completely. If you are unsure how to do so, please check with your email provider (such as Gmail or Rogers), as the process is a bit different for each one.

And if you have any questions about the changeover, the new look and feel of the newsletter, or the benefits of a paid subscription, please don’t hesitate to email me about those as well.

See you on the other side!
