This is another photo from my archives—this time, from a research trip for a magazine article in 2014. I shot this in the gorgeous garden of a friend’s cottage on Golden Lake.

The lake and its residents have had a rough time this year, due to flooding and the continuing rain. If you’re in the area, check the warnings from the local residents’ association regarding water levels, road closures and so on. But don’t be deterred from visiting this beautiful part of the province, near Barry’s Bay and Killaloe in Renfrew County; businesses are open!

If you’re looking for places to visit near Golden Lake (well, near-ish—it’s a spread-out region!), here are a few ideas.

  • Check out the village of Wilno, where a group called the Kashubians from what is now Poland settled and created a vibrant community, starting in the 1800s. The Wilno Heritage Park tells their tale, and the Wilno Tavern across the road serves up some mighty fine pierogies.
  • Follow in the footsteps of a Group of Seven painter along the A.Y. Jackson Trail.
  • Check out the South of 60 Arts Centre in Barry’s Bay, which holds all sorts of events (on Saturday, July 8, it’s hosting the Madawaska Valley Artisan Festival). While you’re in town, pick up some bread or sweets at The Baykery, or visit Charlie D’s for poutine.
  • Take a hike through beautiful, unspoiled Shaw Woods.
  • Explore Algonquin Provincial Park—camp, hike, swim, fish and do all sorts of other outdoorsy things. And did you know the park is home to a logging museum, right near the eastern park entrance?

Throughout July and August 2017, I’ll be posting one photo a day that I’ve taken somewhere across Canada, in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Want to see more photos in this series? Type “Canada 150 photo” in the search window on the right-hand side of this page.
