At the Montreal Barbie Expo, I may well have hit my Barbie overload limit.

Display cases filled with luxuriously dressed versions of the world’s most famous fashion doll stretch in every direction under glittering chandeliers. Doll collectors donated many of these Barbies, and fashion designers have dressed a few of them.

Note: I wrote this post before the Barbie Expo was damaged by flooding in summer 2023. The Barbie Expo is up and running again (as of late 2023), but some of the dolls and displays mentioned in this post may still be undergoing restoration. I’ll update this article the next time I’m in Montreal. Stay tuned!

large room lined with display cases of barbie dolls
This is just one section of the Barbie Expo. It just goes on and on!

It’s all an attention-getter for Les Cours Mont-Royal, a posh downtown mall not far from the main train station. Big signs outside lure you into the free Barbie Expo, and the mall’s owners—who set up the permanent show—clearly hope you’ll be inspired by Barbie’s fashion savoir-faire to go buy a few frocks of your own in the shopping centre.

It’s actually not a bad idea, because the show is a ton of campy fun—like a walk-through fashion magazine liberally laced with childhood nostalgia. No matter what your style or favourite celebrity, you’ll likely find a Barbie here that will have you reaching for your cellphone.

Don’t believe me? Here are just a few of the many photos I snapped of the 500 or so Barbies jockeying for visitors’ attention at the Montreal Barbie Expo.

doll in multicoloured elizabethan gown and another barbie in a purple-and-gold historical dress
You’ll find historically costumed dolls from just about every era.
barbie in a purple victorian dress with pink underskirt and lace trim
This Victorian Barbie holds an anachronistic teddy bear (they weren’t invented until about 1902). But, hey, this isn’t a history museum!
barbies in purple and gold flapper dresses with feather boas
Is it just me, or does the flapper on the right look a bit tilted? Maybe too much bathtub gin?
three dolls, one with a pink poodle skirt, one in a green dress with a 1950s-style head scarf and one in a white mini dress with green coat
From poodle skirts to mini skirts.

Many of the Barbies highlight contemporary designers.

barbies with pink hair, one wearing leopard-print leggings and the other in a mini dress with silver top and cartoon-patterned skirt
Fashion line Tokidoki riffs on Japanese style.
doll wearing white mermaid-style long dress with gold lace trim
Many collectors covet the limited-edition Barbies created by fashion designer Byron Lars.
long display case of barbies wearing elaborate silver, black, white and pink bob mackie gowns
Over-the-top designer (and Cher favourite) Bob Mackie has multiple dolls in the collection.

Lots of celebrities and famous characters get a nod.

audrey hepburn doll in long black dress, grace kelly doll in a 1950s flowered dress with wide skirt, liz taylor doll dressed as cleopatra
Classic fashion icons (from left to right) Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Liz Taylor.
beyoncé barbie in bright pink halter dress with sequins
No display of celebs would be complete without Beyoncé.
barbara eden doll dressed in pink i dream of jeannie costume.
Go ahead, hum the I Dream of Jeannie theme. I know you want to.
james dean doll dressed in red jacket and jeans
Not all the dolls in the collection are women. James Dean is cool even in miniature.
mutya barbie in long pink dress with peach-coloured embroidered overdress and gold fan
Filipina model Mutya Johanna Datul gets a spectacular dress.

Not many of the Barbies seem to have jobs, but there is a Mountie Barbie.

barbie with long red hair, wearing a red rcmp dress uniform
Does that hairdo meet regulations, Barbie?

Some of the dioramas border on the surreal.

large glass display case with 16 barbies representing various tv and movie characters.
What is happening here? Why are Superman and Mr. Spock hanging out with Robin Hood and the cast of The Wizard of Oz? I have so many questions.

And there’s even a weirdly mesmerizing fashion show, where propped-up dolls slowly glide along a runway as Barbie photographers flash their tiny cameras.

If you’re a pop culture nut or a fashionista who doesn’t take things too seriously, the Barbie Expo is a fun way to while away an hour or so. Grab Skipper and your dusty Barbie Camper, and head down Highway 417 if you’re intrigued.

If you go

Barbie Expo claims to be the largest permanent exhibition of Barbie dolls in the world. If you’d like to check it out, you’ll find it at Les Cours Mont-Royal, 1455 Peel, Montreal. Currently, it opens daily at 9am from Monday through Saturday and closes at 6:30pm from Monday through Wednesday, at 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and at 5pm on Saturdays. On Sundays, it is open from 12pm to 5pm. As mentioned earlier, admission is free.
